Emily Bates

Emily Bates (UK, 1970) ondernam in 2013 en 2014 verschillende pelgrimstochten in het vulkanisch landschap rondom Napels met de Vesuvius, de Solfatara en de Flegreïsche Velden. Haar interesse gaat uit naar onze relatie met het landschap waarin we leven. Bates onderzocht de locale vertellingen, tradities en rituelen van een plek. De Tammurriata is een lied en dans met een tamboerijn en heeft zijn oorsprong in de orale tradities en de rituelen in de regio Campania. De seismologische activiteiten in deze regio kunnen in verband gebracht worden met de ontwikkeling van de lokale muziek- en danstradities. Middels geluidsopnames en beeld, construeert Emily met haar werk een nieuwe dialoog tussen een ademend landschap en de dansende mens.

“Seismic Dreamers” is een serie portretten die voortkomt uit haar residency in Napels en tonen teenagers in straten en binnenplaatsen in Napels. De foto’s zijn de neerslag van een kortstondig, intiem contact met de kunstenaar dat chaos van het stedelijk landschap een ogenblik to rust roept.

In 2013 and 2014 Emily Bates undertook several pilgrimages to the volcanic landscape around Naples, encompassing the Vesuvius, the Solfatara and the Phlegrean Fields. Her research into local narratives, traditions and rituals explore our relationship to the landscape in which we live.

Research encompassed the seismic activity of the Campania region, and its influence on the development of the local music and dance traditions, in particular the Tammurriata with its dance and musical score played on a tambourine. Through photography, film and sound recordings Emily’s work constructs a dialogue between a breathing landscape and dancing man.

A portrait series coming out of the residency is “Seismic Dreamers”, a series of photos of teenagers in streets and courtyards in Naples, Italy. By entering into a brief moment of trust and openness with the artist, an intimate and vulnerable transformation and silence pauses the relentless chaotic magma of the city.
