Hans Wilschut

Het botsen van werelden is een thema dat Hans Wilschut (NL, 1966) bezighoudt en iets wat veelvuldig terug komt in de stad Napels, waar een grote werkeloosheid heerst en verschillen tussen arm en rijk schrijnend zijn.

In de buitenwijk Scampia aan de noordzijde van de stad heeft Hans bij een paar jaar geleden de ‘Vele’ (in het Nederlands de ‘zeilen’) bezocht. Deze gebouwen geconstrueerd tussen 1962 en 1975 vormden een aantal jaren geleden het decor van de film ‘Gomorra’ naar het boek van Roberto Saviano. Hans: “De gebouwen van de ‘Vele’ zijn doorleefd en vol littekens, ze hebben een eigen schoonheid maar balanceren op de rand van onomkeerbaar verval, net zoals de omgeving waar ze in staan. In het ingenieuze trappenhuisstelsel van een van deze palazzi zag ik een soort ruggengraat, bijna een metafoor voor wat de camorra ook is, een niet weg te denken pilaar in een informele omgeving, die naast de formele omgeving bestaat met eigen regels, economie en zorgstelsel. De ‘Vele’ zijn verworden tot een architectonisch symbool voor een sociale kwestie.“ Uit dit eerste bezoek in 2011 onstond dit jaar het werk ‘Backbone’.

In maart 2017 kwam Hans Wilschut terug naar Napels nadat duidelijk was geworden dat de ‘Vele’ gesloopt zouden worden. Vele gesprekken en vele uren filmmateriaal resulteerden uiteindelijk in de film ‘La Nave’ (in het Nederlands ‘het schip’) die de relatie belicht tussen architectuur van de Vele en haar bewoners.

La Nave ging vorig jaar in première op het Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam, en werd het kort daarna in Italië vertoond op het Milano Design Film Festival. Onlangs won de film op Masterdoc Festival in Los Angeles een prijs voor beste artistieke documentaire.

Worlds that collide is a theme that occupies Hans Wilschut's (NL, 1966) mind and work and something that returns often in the city of Naples. Naples is a city with big differences between rich and poor and with a high degree of disoccupation.

A few years ago Hans visited the suburb Scampia to the north of Naples where he saw the 'Vele' (in English the ‘sails’). These buildings constructed between 1962 and 1975 were the setting of the film ‘Gomorra’ made after the book of Roberto Saviano from 2008. Hans: "The buildings of the 'Vele' have gone through many things and are full of scars, they have their own beauty but at the same time they balance on the edge of irreversible decay, just as how they exist in the society where they are placed. In the ingenious structure of staircases of one of the buildings I saw a kind of backbone, almost a metaphor for what the camorra also is, a pillar in an informal society, that exists next to the formal society with his own rules, economy and system of health and social care. The 'Vele' have become an architectural symbol for a social issue." The work ‘Backbone’. is the result of the visit Hans paid in 2011 to Naples.

In March 2017, Hans Wilschut returned to Naples after it became clear that the 'Vele' would be demolished. Many conversations and many hours of film material eventually resulted in the film 'La Nave' (in English 'the ship') that highlights the relationship between architecture of the Vele and its inhabitants.

La Nave premiered last year at the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam, and was screened shortly afterwards in Italy at the Milano Design Film Festival. The film recently won an award for best artistic documentary at the Masterdoc Festival in Los Angeles.
